59 (sixty minus one) is a sequel to Sixty—Moving Theater's performance presented in fall 2006 at La Générale, an artists' squat in Paris. The company returns to the same material—drawn from the minutiae of their lives, their history of moving together, and the heat of living in America today—this time, with the handicap of a missing performer. Minus one, the company forges on in a myth-filled landscape under permanent construction, where video footage taken from previous performances mixes with the live event, a world in which bodies collide, walls disappear and the music of Dolly Parton and Mozart make sense together.

59 (sixty minus one) is Moving Theater's personal and political response to the conditions of the piece's construction. Weeks before the scheduled preview, the company realized it was financially impossible to engage a Paris-based performer to develop and perform the work in New York. Sixty minus one becomes fifty nine. What is left behind? What is gained?

This performance is made possible in part by a developmental residency at the EFA Gallery, a program of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts.
